I'll agree with you Kevin that a formal app store may not be needed. What is needed is a way to charge customers for applications (not available yet) so developers can spend time developing quality applications for Android phones. Of course this can and will happen - but Apple already has a store with tons of quality applications. Ultimately, though, the choice between Apple and Android will just be left to one's preference between operating systems and hardware -- rather than apps. But for now, apps are perhaps the main difference.

A formal app store might not be that important as a "next step" for Android. The current "marketplace" works and feels very much like an store for applications -- especially for those who haven't experienced Apple's version.
